Don’t Be Jan Ullrich This Winter
For years I’ve endured my younger brother’s teasing about being Jan Ullrich. What? You don’t know I mean by that? You see, Jan Ullrich was the winner of the 1997 Tour de France and Lance Armstrong’s erstwhile nemesis at the Tour de France for years. But Jan had this thing going on where he’d get way out of shape and gain tons of weight in the off-season. Then, he’d have to work his rear-end off (quite literally) every spring to get in shape for the Tour de France. After a ton of hard work, he’d show up at the Tour in July in top form and super-skinny! Then (except in 1997), he’d lose to Lance.
Every year, I seem to struggle with keeping my weight and fitness level in check over the holidays and winter months. I’m pretty sure lots of you do as well. Now, none of us are going to race in the Tour de France this year so I guess that’s where our common thread with Jan falls apart. But, maybe if we didn’t let ourselves go in the winter, we’d be so much more competitive next spring or summer. Think of how great it would be to hit the road in shape in March and April! Spring rides would be much more enjoyable. So, before New Year’s even comes close this year, I’m making my own resolution not to be Jan Ullrich this winter. How about you?
And, if you needed some inspiration not to be Jan, check out this hilarious parody of Jan’s winter training for the 2010 Tour de France. You know you DON’T want to be that guy right?!?!?

I’ve still been riding, but now it’s getting too cold. I don’t know what I’ll do. Maybe I’ll do a thousand jumping-jacks everyday.

Jan Ullrich was really something else. If Lance hadn’t been around, he would have been the one winning six tours. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d even done more had he not been depressed from being an eternal second-place finisher. He was coming second to Lance whilst two years younger and would probably still be riding today were it not for the whole doping thing.

I’ll just ride through winter. If weather gets absurdly nasty, I have an indoor trainer, but I’d really rather not spend 2 hours on that thing as it gets pretty boring and does zero in the bike handling skills department. There’s a lot to be said for [dressing properly for the weather](http://www.icebike.org/Clothing/clothing.htm ). Wicking base layers and warm things for your feet and hands and you’re good to go.

Still riding, my shop also has a computrainer multirider studio in the basement so I can use that once it gets nasty out, indoor bouldering/climbing, and bikram yoga.

How cold does it get where you are?

How cold does it get? This week we’ve hit -2 degrees F. Coooooold!!! Today it’s downright balmy at 30 degrees F.
Racquetball is a great workout that is inside, burns tons of calories, and more than anything is a lot of fun. Might be something else to try. Used to do a lot of it when the weather went bad.
